All about the PoetBureau
Mission and Vision
The mandate of the PoetBureau is to bring poetry to the people. We programme events that showcase a wide range of poetic styles from poets and spoken word artists who work in different genres under the umbrella known as 'poetry'. Our vision is to change the public's perception of poetry which is generally that poetry is irrelevant and boring, a perception that conjures up images of tweed-jacketed professors holding long lectures on the canon of dead white male poets. By introducing the audience to poetry that speaks to our common everyday experiences with words that resonate, and using a variety of interesting, exciting (and sometimes challenging) genres which range from dub to sound to language to free verse, we offer the audience a chance to form their own opinions about if and how poetry can be part of their lives. While presenting different kinds of poetry, we programme our events with poets from all over Canada that mirror our audience aboriginal, black, Asian, gay, straight, white, male and female we strive to represent our multicultural society.
